Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty
Q: What is Blepharoplasty?
A: This is an oculo-plastic procedure which involves removal of extra
eyelid skin and fatty tissue from around the eyes. It is an out-patient
procedure that can improve peripheral vision by removing excessive,
overhanging eyelids. It can also rejuvenate one's appearance by reversing
age and sun induced skin changes. Some patients benefit from lifting their
eyelids in addition to removing the excessive eyelid skin. The need to
lift the lids if necessary will be discussed with Board Certified Plastic
Surgeon, Gary Alter, MD, during your consultation.
Q: What symptoms indicate that Blepharoplasty would be beneficial?
A: Reduced peripheral vision causing you to turn your head to the sides.
Excessive brow furrows and brow ache due to your attempts to lift your
lids using your brow muscles. Fatigue that occurs by day's end due to the
constant work to lift the brow and eyelids. These symptoms are all
indicative of the need to consider eyelid surgery.
Q: How is Blepharoplasty performed?
A: This is an out-patient procedure that takes approximately 30-45 minutes
to perform in an operating suite.
Q: What can I expect after surgery?
A: There will be some stitches present for about one week. The stitches
will be hidden in the eyelid crease and removed at about 7 days or may be
dissolved if internal. You can expect some swelling and bruising to occur
but this is minimized with ice compresses over the first 36 hours. Most
people can return to full normal activity at one week. Light,
non-strenuous activity can resume in several days following the procedure.
Blepharoplasty Example: 49 year old male underwent upper blepharoplasty with removal of upper eyelid skin and fat and lower eyelid blepharoplasty with fat removal.
